„Through epidemiological studies, I identified a risk-associated genotype coding for a mitochondrial protein that increases susceptibility to Alzheimer’s disease. Individuals with this genotype exhibited high oxidative stress, which I confirmed using cultured cells.
Utilising genetic engineering, I developed a mouse model for dementia. While amyloid beta accumulation is widely considered the primary cause of Alzheimer’s disease, our findings suggest that dementia can develop even in the absence of amyloid beta buildup. This study indicated that Alzheimer’s disease could potentially be prevented or its symptoms alleviated without reducing amyloid beta accumulation.
I then used this model to evaluate the effects of hydrogen water on dementia and found that drinking hydrogen water significantly suppressed cognitive decline in the model mice. These promising findings led to a clinical study, paving the way for further investigation into hydrogen therapy as a potential neuroprotective strategy.“
